![]() Geoff & Bev Buckley A series of four two-hour evening workshops and a one-day field trip about growing nutritious fruit and vegetables without herbicides and pesticides will be held in late January and February at Beechmont and Tamborine Mountain. The Growing Healthy workshops are hosted jointly by the Ethos Foundation and Tamborine Mountain & District Local Producers Association. They will be presented by Geoff and Bev Buckley, founders of the Tamborine Mountain Green Shed and winners of the Queensland small business Champion Award 2007 for Fresh Food. Presenter Geoff Buckley said, “The ‘Growing Healthy’ workshops investigate the links that exist between farming practices, the value and integrity of the food that is produced and the effect this food has on our health.” “Solutions that make logical sense are provided because the workshops emphasise how to grow healthy food and why it is important to do so,” Geoff said. Workshop participants will learn about: • The four key things you need to have right in order to grow nutritious fruit and vegetables; • The direct parallels between soil health and human health; • The critical importance of pH, how to measure it and how to change it; • The reasons why it is essential to have all the minerals in your soil in correct balance; • and why, when you do things properly, you don’t need herbicides and pesticides. The Beechmont workshop series is supported by Beaudesert Shire Council’s Community Environment Assistance Scheme and is part of a pilot project designed to build community capacity in sustainable farming in Beechmont. They will be held at Beechmont State School for four weeks starting on Tuesday, January 29, and then weekly on Tuesday nights February 5, 12 and 19 between 7pm and 9.30pm. The Tamborine Mountain series starts on Thursday, January 31 and also continues weekly for four weeks. The two groups will join together for a field trip on Tamborine Mountain on Sunday, February 3. The fee for the workshop series is $100 per person ($160 per couple) and includes comprehensive course notes and lunch on the field day. Places are strictly limited.
