Stillness in Action develops wisdom, calmness, courage and clarity to sustain a life of freedom and integrity in challenging times.

Take the opportunity to:
  • Learn a simple meditation to still the confusions of the mind - allowing wisdom and compassion to arise, and freeing your intellectual, emotional and creative intelligence;
  • Renew your spirit for restoring a sustainable environment, for building a just and equitable society, for participating in healthy and creative communities, for personal and social healing;
  • Strengthen confidence, kindness and joy - and your power to make a difference - through processes of deep ecology, systems science and ancient earth wisdom;
  • Use practical tools to clarify your values and intentions and move them into action;
  • Learn how to build sustaining communities of friendship.
  • Nurture and refresh your body and mind through walking, yoga, journalling and silent contemplation in the beauty of nature.

Mornings of quiet reflection teach the sacred art of presence. Each afternoon, creative group work reveals fresh paths to personal and social change - inspired by Joanna Macy’s work – see www.joannamacy.net Evenings sharing stories, poetry, music and laughter, enliven and deepen community. Each day unfolds a new perspective on a journey to reconnect our lives with our world.

See below to read testimonials from past participants.

"Go forth on your journey for the benefit of the many, for the joy of the many, out of compassion for the world, for the welfare, for the benefit and joy of all beings." The Buddha

Retreat Leaders

Bobbi Allan is a Buddhist teacher in the Insight tradition. She brings to this work over 30 years of Buddhist practice and social action, and a professional background in management training, facilitation and communication / conflict processes. She has worked and trained with Joanna Macy since 1984. She is a founding member of Heart Politics Conferences and the Social Change Training & Resource Centre. She writes and works on contemporary issues.
Bobbi will be assisted in Ballina by Joan McVilly and Will Bulmer, and in Victoria by Glenda Lindsay and Tathra Street.

Joan Mcvilly has a long involvement with the environment movement, is trained in Gestalt therapy and works at Wild Mountains Environmental Education Centre.
Will Bulmer is a yoga teacher and psychology student, with interests in holistic health and wellbeing and exploring models of sustainable living.

Glenda Lindsay is a Melbourne based community worker concentrating on food re-localisation, sustainability and singing.
Tathra Street is a Sustainability Consultant who has recently completed a 30-day intensive training with Joanna Macy.
(Simon Clough, who normally co-leads the retreats, is busy standing for election to Lismore City Council – elections September 2008 – we wish him great success!)

Our venues are in beautiful locations, with ready access to the bush / beach. Delicious vegetarian food is served and special dietary needs can be catered for if advised in advance.

Costs and 'Dana' Policy
This is an invaluable, low-cost retreat. The fixed cost (which we keep to a minimum) covers the cost of: venue, accommodation, meals, advertising, materials & facilitators’ travel expenses.

'Dana': The facilitators’ time and preparation is compensated by voluntary, anonymous donation at the end of the retreat. The facilitators follow the age-old Buddhist tradition of 'dana' (generosity) by offering their work freely. In relying on participants’ generosity we are moving to an economy of gift.

Fixed costs
Ballina: $360 - $225
Victoria: $550 – $350
All costs on sliding scale: top price $40,000+ income – bottom price $15,000- income. Please set your own rate. We have kept costs to a minimum, so the more you can pay, the more likely we are to break even. Higher payments will help lower income people attend. Some part scholarships available on request.
